Due Dates: Submit list of ten tools by May 27, first draft of report by June 3 for peer review, final draft by June 17
Social media and social networking sites today go far beyond Facebook and Twitter. Using the links below, curate a list of at least ten social media sites with which you are currently unfamiliar, and write a 5-7 page report explaining your analysis of each site using the elements below (based on the seven building blocks of social media). Use the three elements to analyze each site. This report is intended to be a summary and not an exhaustive analysis of each site.
Introduction -- describe the site's audience and purpose. Who is the site intended for, and who actually uses the site? Describe the dominant gender and age range of the site's users. Explain the purpose of the site, including information shared by type, interaction design, relationships that are built.
Seven Building Blocks -- describe the site's typical daily usage and interaction using the seven building blocks described in Kietzmann, Hermkens, McCarthy, & Silvestre, Understanding the functional building blocks of social media. How is information shared? How do users interact with the site and each other? What are unexpected or alternative uses of the site? Base your discussion on these 7 building blocks:
Conclusion and Recommendations -- summarize the site's audience, purpose, and usage, and make recommendations for the class regarding personal and organizational use of the site.
Peer Review assignments: Ken reviews Lisa, who reviews Varad, who reviews Johnathan, who reviews Diana, who reviews Ken.
Curated lists of social media tools
To prevent duplication, provide a list of your ten sites by Monday, May 27. I will compare your chosen sites and ensure that each student has a list of ten different sites. Since there are hundreds of sites, choose carefully, and try to avoid the most commonly-used sites.
