Welcome to Week Two! Here are our learning objectives this week:

1. Understand how to analyze a document to see if it is effective and why or why not.
2. Apply principles of effective resume and cover letter design.

Document Analysis

One of the goals of our class is to help you become very critical of document design. To do this, you must learn three important concepts in writing technical documents:

1. Document Style
2. Overall Document Design
3. Design of Visuals in documents

Your next assignment is the Document Analysis assignment. I have grouped you into small groups and assigned a document to your group. Your job is to read the material below that explains how to analyze documents for these three concepts, and then as a group, analyze your assigned document and evaluate how well it accomplishes these three concepts. Then you will write a group report on your findings.

Document Style -- Read only Section 3 of this document

Overall Document Design -- (1) article from Cypress Media and (2) Purdue OWL INDOT document design presentation -- click the presentation to download it -- it will come down as a PowerPoint file.

Visual Design -- Designing Effective Documents for Visual Impact and (2) Purdue OWL HATS presentation for visual design -- download the PPT presentation

 

Assignments due June 9-- Resume & Cover Letter for Peer Review

We'll go over resumes and cover letters in class on Monday. The document analysis report will be due June 16.

Reflection and Discussion -- please complete by June 9

Our main goal this week is to learn how to analyze documents for style, basic design, and visuals. Now that you've obtained a basic understanding, go to our Google doc for the June 9 class discussion, glance over the document, and click into the Google doc and and respond to the prompt at the beginning of the page.
