285 Newsletter Assignment
Purpose:
Your task is to create a newsletter for a professional organization
or group of your choice. You will need to compose your own text
and create or find your own graphic elements.
Ideas
for Audience (but not limited to these)
- Business
- Non-profit
organization
- Fund-raising/development/foundation
- School/university
Fraternities,
sororities, school organizations, etc. do not count as potential
projects (sorry!). Ask me if you have an idea but are not sure if
it is appropriate.
Audience:
You must be able to clearly describe your projected audience in
the preliminary newsletter profile sent to the listserv (by Session
Ten.)
Purpose:
Your newsletter should be informational, designed to convey information
to your target audience. It can be topical, about a series of events,
or instructional (in that it explains or teaches.)
Personal
Constraints: This is an individual design project-beyond simple
peer conversations, you may not seek detailed assistance with design
or with the common tasks you are supposed to know in PageMaker.
If you are attempting a technique beyond what we have studied, you
may seek technical assistance. Of course, you may always ask your
instructor for help.
Cost
Constraints: Act as though you are operating on a very limited budget.
Plan to reproduce copies in black and white, rather than taking
newsletter to a printer. The newsletter should have a self-mailer
to avoid buying envelopes. Use color if you'd like, but act as though
mass production would require black and white.
Template
& Grade Considerations: Please do not use a predefined Pagemaker
or Word template for newsletters. These are available in many sources.
I'm relying on you to abide by the University's Honor Code and do
all work on your own.
Due
Dates
On
Session 13, please bring in your draft design for peer review.
Your
final copy is due on Session 14.
Evaluation:
The redesigned newsletter will be graded using the Newsletter
Grading Rubric.
Submission
Format: Please submit your newsletter in a printed form in class.
