Getting Started as an eMentor

How much time will I have to invest as an eMentor?

The amount of time you put into communicating via the Blackboard eDiary discussion board is up to you and your mentee. (Obviously, the more time you put in the more students will benefit.) However, the minimum requirement for eMentoring is responding to mentees' questions and posted documents twice each week (approximately 30 minutes) during January, February, and March, 2006. How will I know how to assist my mentees?

The Program Director (sfleischer@wbais.org) will contact eMentors via email and provide a brief  bio of their assigned students and their tentative science fair projects. A hyperlink to the team's Blackboard space will direct eMentors to login and view a short video clip posted by the mentees introducing themselves and describing their proposed research project. eMentors may then start a new thread of discussion in the student eDiary section and introduce themselves, offer encouragement, and support the mentees' research proposal with useful Internet and/or print resources.

Remember, these are middle school children ranging in ages from eleven to fourteen.  Be patient and assume they need more help than they ask for.

There is a chance that your mentee may want to speak with you on the phone, email you from their private or school email, set up a chat, add you to their MSN or ICQ. Within the framework of this project, we do not encourage you to "meet" with your mentee in any other venue than through the research ediary within BlackBoard. If you have any questions or problems, please contact the Program Director immediately (sfleischer@wbais.org).

For security and privacy reasons, there are some things you should never share with your mentee, and that the student(s) should never share with you: • a private e-mail address • a postal mailing address • a private phone number • aliases used in an online discussion group.

No press/media outlet will be notified about your participation or your activities in this program without your express approval.
