• The Java EE EE 6 Tutorial, by Jendrock et al., Oracle, download from http://docs.oracle.com/javaee/6/tutorial/doc/ (Required for the Enterprise Java option)
• Professional Enterprise.NET (1st ed.), by John Arking and Scott Millett, Wiley, ISBN 978-0-470-44761-1 (2009) (Required for the Enterprise .NET option)

• Note that this course is intended to be OS neutral.
• An Internet ftp client of your choice.  Core FTP LE is free and works well http://www.coreftp.com/ .  (Required, but your choice)
• A set of web capabilities tutorials such as http://http://w3schools.com/ (Required, but you may choose your own tutorials.) (See "Capabilities Need to Complete This Course/Category A" under Assignments below)
• An enterprise software development environment such as those suggested in the enterprise software textbooks (above). (Required, but your choice)

Catalog Description (Course Purpose):

Special Topics. This is a beginning course in Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). Some prerequisite web capabilities and enterprise programming are covered, as needed.

This course begins on August 21, 2012.

Course Objectives:

Breadth and Depth in Defining, Analyzing, and Solving Complex Problems:

• After successfully completing this course, you should be able to demonstrate a basic capability to apply object-oriented project techniques to solve complex problems.

Communicate Technical Aspects of the Solution for Complex Software Engineering Problems to a Technical Audience:

• After successfully completing this course, you should be able to demonstrate a basic ability to communicate regarding the application of object-oriented project techniques to a technical audience.

Prerequisites:

SSE 550.

Class Location:

• The Online Learning asynchronous "meetings" take place in Cyberspace; i.e., on the Internet.

Assignments:

• Purpose of projects:
• Use the projects to develop your capabilities, and
• Use the projects to demonstrate your capabilities.

• Deliverables for all projects:
• Projects may be delivered via the course FTP site which will be announced.
• Your report should be a single, standalone document .doc, or .pdf format, or a single set of appropriately linked html pages.
• Your report should be organized in such a way as to make the topics that you want credit for covering easy to find, and demonstrate your capabilities clearly and convincingly. Everything you want considered for credit, including code and tests (including test results), should be included in the report.
• Each project can be a single, integrated project that tries to actually do something, or a collection of exercises that demonstrate your capabilities but don't accomplish anything else, or any combination of these two alternatives that you find convenient.
• You may include other material outside of the report (on the FTP site), if you wish, but this material may or may not be considered in evaluating your work.
• For each capability that you demonstrate within a report or major section of that report, you may present only the final result of your work; you need not demonstrate every step in the development of that result.

• Capabilities Needed to Complete This Course:
• Capabilities A and B can be developed in parallel with each other. Both A and B need to be developed before starting Capability C.
• A. Web Capabilities (See Software [including web sites] above):

• JAVASCRIPT
• XML

• B. Enterprise Development Capabilities, as presented in your enterprise texts.
• If you are a C++ programmer who does not already know C#, your first step is the C# appendix in the "C# Professional Enterprise .NET" text, to begin your transition to C#.
• C. SOA Capabilities, as presented in your SOA text.

• Some suggestions for doing a project are contained in the One Way to Do a Project page.

  • Project 0 (Solo)
    • Create a plan for Projects 1, 2, and 3. This plan will be a living plan: you are to update it as the term progresses.
    • Deliver this project, and its updates, via the course listserv.
      
    • Your plan is to include which capabilities you will cover for each project.
    • Read the sections on Projects 1, 2, and 3, below, before starting to write your plan.
    • Be realistic in your planning; do not plan too little.
      
    • Be realistic in your planning; do not plan too much.
    • Please raise any issues or questions via the course listserv
  • Project 1(Solo)
    • If you have Category A work to do, it should be completed in this project. You should not be working category A after Project 1.
    • If you are already proficient in applying categories A and B, then you may move directly into the category C work.
      
    • If you are not already proficient in applying both categories A and B, then you should complete all of category A and some of category B before moving into category C.
    • Please raise any issues or questions via the course listserv.
  • Project 2 (Solo)
    • Extend your capabilities beyond what you did in Project 1. Category A should have been completed by the end of Project 1.
      
    • Please raise any issues or questions via the course listserv.
  • Project 3 (Team)
    • Extend your capabilities beyond what you did in Project 2. At least some category C capabilities must be included.
