Direct and Non-Direct Activities

Changes are likely; please check back frequently.

It is essential that you distinguish correctly between Direct and Non-Direct Activities for your SSE courses. This distinction will impact your management of your time and work in the course. See also Report Logs.

Direct Activities

Direct activities are analogous to activities that would be done in class in a face-to-face (non-Distance-Learning) course.

Direct activities include:

  • Collaborative discussions with other students regarding the content of readings assigned for the course.
  • Collaborative discussions with other students regarding the content that goes beyond readings assigned for the course, but is not part of work on the projects assigned on the syllabus.
  • Collaborative development of generic technology that may be useful for your project(s), but is not, in its generic form, part of your project.
  • Studying web videos or other appropriate media on the assigned topics; do not take credit for this as a direct activity unless you record both the title/subject of the video and the video's URL in your log.

Direct activities do not include:

  • Doing the assigned reading.
  • Working on the projects assigned on the syllabus.

Non-Direct Activities

Non-Direct activities are analogous to activities that would be done outside of class in a face-to-face (non-Distance-Learning) course.

Non-Direct activities include:

  • Doing the assigned reading.
  • Working on the projects assigned on the syllabus, whether that work is collaborative or solo.

Non-Direct activities do not include:

  • Collaborative discussions with other students regarding the content of readings assigned for the course.
  • Studying web videos on the assigned topics. You may include web videos specific to your projects, or on topics related to assigned topics, if you log the title/subject and URL of the video.
